Everybody Jump!

This is my Jeff's crazy family.

It is much smaller than my family. 7 kids, all married, 18 nieces/nephews with 2 on the way.

I also noticed today (thanks to my sister, Debi for pointing it out) that pretty soon, most of my siblings will have four children famililes.

Liz (4)
Emily (3 + 1 on the way)
Dave (4)
Debi (3 + 1 on the way)
Anth (1)
Amy (3)

I like my big family though, and I like Jeff's little family. They are different enough that it brings a good balance to our relationship.

Now I'm considering what a hillarious picture it would be if all 34 members of my family got a "family jumping picture" like this one...what a Christmas card that would be!

Gandhi

Last night Jeff and I attended a special program at the downtown library (yes Lindsey, where you work) featuring Arun Gandhi as the featured speaker. We saw a poster for it a few weeks ago when we went to lunch at Himalayan Kitchen mmmmmmmmmmmmm ...

At the outset of his lecture, he told everyone "I was just approached by a journalist the other day who informed me that the Mormons had baptized my grandfather [Mohandas Gandhi] and asked me how I felt about it. Naturally, the small audience laughed and the air got visibly tense. What he said next surprised me.

"During my grandfather's life, he took great pride in being affiliated with all religions of the world. When people would ask him what religious denomination he belonged to, he would respond, "All of them! I am Hindu, I am Muslim, I am Jewish, I am Christian, etc." So I can see my grandfather up there in heaven, receiving the news that he had just been baptized a member of the LDS Church, and exclaiming "Now I am a Mormon too!""

Rather than being offended, annoyed, or angry, he said "I consider it an honor that they would want my grandfather to be a part of them."

Throughout the remainder of his lecture, there was an immense awe and respect he got from the audience. He talked about nonviolence & reminded everyone that violence is not always physical, but is more often passive. When our actions, words, or behaviors hurt anyone (including ourselves) we are practicing passive violence. Passive violence (anger) is the main fuel for physical violence. They were wonderful, and thought provoking ideas.

My favorite story he told, however, was about his father disciplining him through penance rather than punishment. Arun was about 16-years old at the time, and had their family car for the whole day to get it serviced. At 5PM he was to meet his father and drive him home. Instead, he chose to spend the afternoon at a double feature movie at the theater. When he arrived 1 hour late to pick up his father, he lied about why he was late. His father, knowing it was a lie, said "I am shamed that I have not taught you to be brave enough to tell the truth, that you feel you would rather lie than face me." And then insisted he (the father) walk the 18 miles back home in order to meditate on the issue. He didn't punish Arun, but took the responsibility on himself as a father. Wow! Arun Gandhi said that experience was so powerful that he truly has never lied since that day.

Obviously, that kind of life aspiration is not entirely realistic, and he admitted that it all must be balanced within your own life.

Afterward, I went to the audio/visual department and checked out 7 classical CD's (Chamber Music) and Jeff checked out 4 DVD's (mostly Africa documentaries). Then we went home and watched "The Help," while eating salads [not popcorn], while it was winterwonderlanding outside. Life is good!! :)

Decisions Decisions

Life is presenting me with hundreds of possibilities right now, and I am standing at a crossroads, deciding which path to try for now.

Many have asked me recently "What are you up to now [Now that you're home from Africa]?" and my response is usually "I'm still trying to figure that out myself!"

#1 Looking for a job (ever frustrating)
#2 Looking for more violin students (anyone?)
#3 Considering graduate school

Among other things, I have recently taken up a hobby I abandoned ten years ago - figure skating! Upon realizing that it was the only ever form of exercise I actually enjoyed, I bought an annual pass as try to go several times a week. It's exhilarating trying things I haven't attempted for ten years - salchow, lutz, sit spin, etc. Incredible exercise too! I still love it...just have to convince myself to go, just as every other form of exercise demands.

One day at a time!

The Man with the Hair

You know something's just weird when you're sitting down to dinner with your husband and you find a hair in your food that you both prepared....and there's no way to tell who it belongs to...

Jeff's hair is about the same length as mine right now...maybe longer...with the curls it's hard to tell.

The other day, we were meeting a new couple in our ward, and I was trying to describe Jeff to them. I said "tall, bearded, long blonde curly hair." Just after I said that, he approached us from a distance and the girl said, "Is that him with the beautiful hair!?"
I love it though. I think he looks like Fabio.

Valentine's Day

This Valentine's Day was simple and special. For one thing, it was our first spent in our own place! I started the morning with a big "Happy Valentine's Day" on our whiteboard....

and Pillsbury cinnamon rolls for breakfast...in bed. :)
He had 4, I had 4...we're pigs.

I also surprised Jeff later in the day with the heart Jell-O.
This is something he grew up having each Valentine's Day,
and something significant to our first date.
There's bananas and raspberries. I made it at my sister, Amy's house while
we decorated heart sugar cookies together.

The wonderful man surprised me the night before with a cute flower arrangement and some super nice REI gloves. One thing I've always been complaining about lately is cold hands while driving...and having to use my sleeves. You know what I mean? He totally picked up on the complaining (sorry love) and got me gloves! They even have grippy fingers & palms!

Eight years ago, on Valentine's Day, this man took me on our first date.
He made the heart Jell-O...and dinner.
We ate it in the back of his Subaru (long story).
When the night was through, we had the most awkward first kiss ever.
We were only 16, what did we know??
Haha, good times!
:)
Happy Valentine's Day 2012!

Something Old...

...into something new!

"TODAY I will stop and smell the daisies"
......changed to......
"TODAY I will stop and kiss my spouse"

It has a nice black frame (not pictured), which was the main motivation behind doing this project.
